It spells out what you need to do for a POTA activation and how to format your logs to be uploading and who to send them too. Having a website with all the rules and awards you can earn is great. I have made almost all of my POTA Hunter contacts while being a POTA activator making Park-to-Park QSOs. Since I have such high noise at the home QTH they only way I can hunt POTA activators is getting outdoors away from the city. It is really enjoyable to be able to call out and ham radio operators respond and you can hear them. You can hear everyone except there is a solar storm or geomagnetic storm. Getting away from the city noise, in most cases, the noise totally disappears. I have lived in areas where the noise level at my home QTH is very high so it is hard to hear those faint signals. I also really enjoy visiting new places and seeing the cool scenery this world has to offer. I love to get outdoors away from the city. Getting out into nature and away from the noise It allowed me to participate in the hobby I love, ham radio.ġ. After my first POTA activation I was hooked. My first POTA activation was on at K-3188 Fort Cassey State Park. Everyday someone is activating a POTA entity and there is plenty of POTA hunters. It was slow getting started but now has grown into a world wide organized with other countries being added. POTA expanded to include State Parks, National Forests and other entities besides National Parks, Historic Sites and Trails. There was so much success and interest from NPOTA that Parks on the Air was created. My best NPOTA activation was on at K-0052 Mount Rainier National Park where I made 102 QSOs in three hours.īased on my 2016 activations I was the first person to active most of those six parks.įlash forward to 2018 and a new program was introduced called Parks on the Air. It was a nice day with little wind and temps in the mid 50s. My first NPOTA activation was at K-0061 San Juan Island National Historic Site on. I liked that I could spot myself and people wanted to contact me. I did six NPOTA activations in 2016 and really enjoyed it.

I was limited with what I could do at home so getting out and doing portable ham radio was a great option. I participated in NPOTA in 2016 by activating a number of parks in Washington State where I was living at the time. So this was a great way to get more people on the air in a casual way. Contests can be a scary for new amateur radio operators. It was introduced to help get more people on the air.īefore ARRL started their yearly programs there was not much activity on the airwaves for new hams except for contests. Back in 2016 ARRL introduced a program called National Parks on the Air.
